The 2012 Willamette Valley Blues and Brews Festival

JOIN US FOR THE FOURTH ANNUAL

WILLAMETTE VALLEY BLUES AND BREWS FESTIVAL

ON AUGUST 3rd AND 4th, 2012

The 2011 Festival, benefiting Springfield/Eugene Habitat for Humanity, was a huge success. We know the 2012 Festival will be even better! We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to our many sponsors, vendors, musicians, and festival guests (over 3,000 this year) for making this such a special event.

100% of the funds raised by this event, after expenses, go to support Springfield/Eugene Habitat for Humanity’s mission of building simple, affordable, decent homes in partnership with people in need.   In just three years, the Festival has contributed over $45,000 to further S/E Habitat’s mission. S/E Habitat for Humanity recently completed its 47th home, and a deserving  partner  family received the keys to their new home after putting in much hard work and over 400 hours of sweat equity. With your help, we plan to double the number of families we serve in just three short years. By supporting the WVBBF, you are helping us reach that goal.

We would like to introduce you to Roger Jensen. Roger was a volunteer beer pourer in the kiosk at WVBBF in 2010 and 2011, and he stepped up at the last minute during our 2011 festival, took the reins, and quite frankly saved the day. This year, Roger has agreed to be the Brewers Coordinator.  He has a lot of great ideas, the skills to implement them and a passion to help build the Brewery leg into the destination event we are striving to become. We are looking forward to continued growth under his guidance

Whether you are a brewer or a brews fan, please take a minute to read Rogers’ vision for WVBBF and see why we are so excited about our fresh new start with the Brews area:

My involvement with Willamette Valley Blues & Brews is going on its 3rd year. The first two, I volunteered to pour. This year, I volunteered to do more. This last year, I watched and listened while trying to help as much as possible. I watched our volunteers, the brewers on hand and the festival crowd. I had a chance to speak too many, but rarely talked... I listened. I think I learned a few things. Preparation would make every one's life easier. The "festival" aspect of the beer area needed a different path. People thirst for not only brews, but knowledge about the beers and processes they involve. Direct relationship with brewers (or reps) had a noticeable and positive impact on the crowd. It appeared that the craft beer society attracts some pretty neat people. Their passion was contagious! Lastly, but more importantly, it taught me that I have much to learn about craft brewing.

This festival is a benefit for our local Springfield/Eugene Habitat for Humanity. The music acts in 2012 are spectacular. Now, I feel we have an EXCELLENT opportunity to help create an atmosphere that will attract a great deal of good people. My goal is to attend a true festival by its very definition! I am someone who can get things done, yet, I think that input from those attending as a vendor or festival attendee is essential to its success.

We have made several immediate changes:
1. There will be an exclusive Craft Brewers Lounge this year!
2. Craft brewers are encouraged to brew special or collaborative beers for the festival, following WVBBF guidelines (talk with me).
3. We will have a much stronger education emphasis for the inquisitive festival attendees. We have a tentative agreement with a local brewer’s society to participate this year. We look forward to their knowledge and enthusiasm!
4. We are also looking at a Brewers Dinner perhaps a week before the festival.   Again, I think with proper preparation, we can all experience a special event.

Every person I meet through craft beers is an exceptional individual. I'm seeing what this community is about. This is not a job for me, this is a pleasure. I look forward to the opportunity of listening to your experience. Contact me with any questions regarding participation, sponsorships or volunteering, as well as any suggestions you may have.

We are excited to begin announcing our 2012 entertainment roster. The Saturday headliner and the rest of the artists will be added soon.

Friday, August 3:

DEBBIE DAVIES: Our Friday night headliner is the extraordinary guitarist Debbie Davies, winner of the 2010 BMA Koko Taylor "Traditional Female Blues Artist" award. Davies was the featured guitarist in Albert Collins' band for three years and has played and recorded with a "Who's Who" of blues superstars.

RANDY OXFORD: Also performing on Friday evening is dynamic trombonist Randy Oxford, winner of multiple awards including the 2010 Best of the Blues "Best Blues Horn" award.  Oxford also made it to the finals of the 2011 IBC in Memphis, representing the Washington Blues Society and tours worldwide.

TY CURTIS BAND:  This Oregon based blues/rock band has won several awards, including taking second place in the 2009 International Blues Challenge finals. They are a NW favorite and will deliver a dynamic show.

MIA VERMILLION: With a #2 hit on B.B. King's Bluesville and a great set at 2011 Waterfront Blues Festival under her belt, Vermillion has been rising quickly in the blues scene and will kick off this years' festival with the opening set on Friday.  "One of the best vocalists I've heard in a while", Graham Clarke, Blues Bytes Magazine.  Mia and guitarist Orville Johnson represented the Washington Blues Society at the 2010 IBC competition.

Saturday, August 4:

BROTHER YUSEF: On Saturday night, blues dancers will be unable to stand still during the hard driving set of highly regarded master guitarist Brother Yusef.  You won't believe your ears, and you won't be able to get out on that dance floor fast enough!

NATHAN JAMES: Twenty seconds into the first song on his set, and you'll understand why Nathan won the 2007 International Blues Challenge with then partner Ben Hernandez.  After touring as James Harmans' guitarist for 3 1/2 years, Harman says "Of the 65 or so great guitar players I've had in my band since the early 60's, Nathan James is easily the A#1 hands-down stand-out".

MIRIAM’S WELL: “Miriams Well is one of the most exciting bands to come out of Portland in a long time. Miriam’s unique soulful and bluesy voice is complemented and highlighted by the backing of a truly outstanding band...A force to be reckoned with...” - Robyn Shanti, host of The Dharma Well on KBOO 90.7FM, Portland, OR . That pretty much sums up our Rooster’s Stage opener on Saturday afternoon. They tore up the stage at 2011 Waterfront.

MADMAN SAM: Sam represents the Cascade Blues Association at the 2012 IBC in Memphis in the solo/duo competition.  His electrifying roots blues show is perfect to headline the Papa Soul Stomp Stage on Saturday.  You will not be able to sit still!

EAGLE PARK SLIM: This Eugene blues icon will open the festival on Saturday afternoon on Papa’s stage, pounding out classics and originals along with several special guests while we help him celebrate his 70th birthday. What a party this will be!

More to come--we'll see you at the park!!
